We do normally share shows and films, but the conversation around this one was different. I was introduced to this show after three of my Black friends texted me and asked if I had seen it. “Lupin” is a master class in exposing race and class power structures and showing how Diop exploits them time and time again. In a macro sense, Diop rebels against racist French society at large. In a micro sense, his enemy is Hubert Pellegrini, the wealthy “philanthropist” who framed his father. He uses his stylish methods to steal a priceless work of art then put it right back where he found it, but this is so much more than a 10-episode version of “Ocean's Eleven.” Diop’s mission is simple enough: use skills he has built over a career of heists to prove his father’s innocence. In season two, Omar Sy returns as Assane Diop, a man whose father is framed for a crime he did not commit and then dies while in jail. It’s about a man who sees in Lupin an opportunity to become something more than the African immigrant the world expects him to be. Set in Paris with an entirely French-speaking cast (it’s best watched with subtitles, not dubbed), the show is inspired by a series of novels about Arsene Lupin, the original “gentleman thief.” The source material has already been adapted into many iterations, including a popular anime, but the Netflix show isn’t about the legendary character.
